As long as there are plenty of issues to unite a coalition, it can function. It is as the issues that divide come to the forefront that it begins to break down. We have a way to go.......

I think that the dem base is perhaps more fickle than the republican side. I think conservatives, whether fiscal or social, are less likely to switch to the other side. With that said, I do think that it is not beyond them to "sit out" elections.
