Al, That's because no one could prove that he lied to the nation eight month after Pearl Harbor.

According to this link, rumors surfaced almost immediately after the bombing of Pearl Harbor:

Dewey tried to turn it into a campaign issue in 1944, but dropped the issue partly because it would compromise America's war effort.

That's the whole point; the difference was that we were still at war years after Pearl Harbor. Americans were dying by the thousands, and the times were too dire to allow for (too much) partisan politics. Contrast this with 9/11, where Americans returned to "normalcy" relatively quickly, and the Dem dogs started barking almost immediately after Afghanistan.
