When you add sugar you increase the volume. You drag out the simplest questions The answer is not as simple as you might think. If you add sugar to a liquid in which it can disolve, it will not increase the volume so long as the sugar is added slowly enough that it is disolving as rapidly as it is added. (Disolved sugar takes up room between water molecules). If the sugar is added at a faster rate, or added after the liquid is saturated it will remain a solid and increase the volume. TP
