People here are calling for China, and North Korea to sit down with the United States and Japan so we can resolve a looming nuclear crisis. This is not in our interests. Suggesting it betrays an ignorance of the region.

When people suggest motives to other people from different parts of the world, from different cultures and religions -- as is commonly done on this thread -- then it is helpful if the people making the commentary have at least seen a bit of the world, and better yet, if they have actually had direct dealings with people in other parts of the world. I deal with senior people in the Chinese government on a regular basis, and have done so in the past with the Japanese government as well as most of the rest of Asia. China and Japan are utterly and completely different, but you would not likely know that if you have never done business of any kind in Asia. Everybody has one thing in common in Asia -- memories of atrocities committed by the Japanese. The last thing we should be doing is insisting that North Korea sit down with Japan at this point.
