1998- at least 1500 people executed for political reasons

globalsecurity.org

30-60k Shi'a killed in post war insurrection (unfortunately, we led those poor people on)

While he was our bud- we have claims that he killed as many as 60k people with chemicals. But that is pre-1988- when he was our friend in Iraq.

They give 16k documented cases of disappearances- but fail to separate them time-wise. Looks like most of the Kurds disappeared during the Anfal campaign (1988 gendercide.org during a period when we were selling Iraq lots of lovely American weapons.

"At the time of the visit (Rumsfeld's visit to Iraq) , Iraq had already been removed from the State Department's list of terrorist countries in 1982; and in the previous month, November, President Reagan had approved National Security Decision Directive 114, on expansion of U.S.-Iraq relations generally. But it was Donald Rumsfeld's trip to Baghdad which opened of the floodgates during 1985-90 for lucrative U.S. weapons exports--some $1.5 billion worth-- including chemical/biological and nuclear weapons equipment and technology, along with critical components for missile delivery systems for all of the above. According to a 1994 GAO Letter Report (GAO/NSIAD-94-98) some 771 weapons export licenses for Iraq were approved during this six year period....not by our European allies, but by the U.S. Department of Commerce. "

"There were few if any reservations evident in the range of weapons which President Ronald Reagan, and his successor George W. H. Bush were willing to sell Saddam Hussein. Under the Arms Export Control Act of 1976, the foreign sale of munitions and other defense equipment and technology are controlled by the Department of State. During the 1980s, such items could not be sold or diverted to Communist states, nor to those on the U.S. list of terrorist-supporting countries. When Iraq came off that list in 1982, however, some $48 million of items such as data privacy devices, voice scramblers, communication and navigation equipment, electronic components, image intensifiers and pistols (to protect Saddam) were approved for sale during 1985-90."

You will note the many of the most horrible attacks on the Kurds took place during this 85-90 period. I remember Amnesty International covering it- and I remember pictures of the gassed Kurds in one of the magazines I took- Mother Jones, maybe?

Still trying to find numbers on the 91/92- 2002 period. It looks like prime killing time for Saddam was when we were supporting him- the estimates on Kurdish casualties vary wildly- no doubt many of the mass graves date from this time. Very dark irony if Rumsfeld can use those corpses in a way that will suit his game plan.

We'll see how many Iraqis end up being killed in our occupation. I can't find any good totals on that either. Impossible to believe the military at this point. It will take time to know if the Iraqis have been lucky to get rid of Saddam, or if they have simply gone our of the frying pan, into another frying pan. Time will tell, it always does. I prefer not to make a religion about things- so, with no really hard credible numbers, I'll wait and see.
