Some wars are started too early, some are fought too quickly. The last sucessful war began in 1941, several years after it could have started but not too soon to bring the American people along. It was fought deliberately and with a sense of enevitability that had both the victors and the vanquished ready for peace, and so peace between the combatants was achieved.

The iraqi wars are really just blitzkrieg battles within the larger middle eastern war. They are fought with intensity but very short duration, there are no vanquished, only the temporarily outmaneuvered. The victory posturing is both too soon and in too bad a taste to allow even the victors to accept that a verdict has been reached. We have not seen the last of this situation by far. That is how this war is similar to Vietnam.
