My contact with Europe is limited. In Asia, the view seems to be that we are very powerful, but not wise. It takes time to prove you are wise. A great deal will depend on whether the American people show their wisdom or show themselves to be easily manipulated by people like Rove. So far, manipulation has proven to be relatively easy.

we'll never regain the trust of the world's democracies

I don't think that's necessarily true. There is a huge, though often unstated, reserve of respect for America in the democratic nations of the world. There is also a huge amount of frustration, and, increasingly, fear. These can be reversed if their causes are reversed.

What the American administration doesn't realize is that the frustration and fear are not simply created by the leftist ravings of elite dilettantes. Many people around the world have experienced the corrupting influence of power, and they have an inherent fear of concentrated power that is in no way illegitimate. We have to realize that what looks to us like a resurgence of confidence in American values may look to others like the first signs that power is beginning to corrupt us. Experience has taught the world that when the strongest guy on the block starts beating his chest and proclaiming his own excellence, bad things are about to happen.
