as you said it yourself, the severity was due to the execution of american agents. If I recall it correctly, the theory was that even though that he passed information to a friendly nation that friendly nation had moles (russian agents) who passed info to Russia which resulted in execution of US agents.
The new theory is that that was 2 recently discovered russian agents (one of them was this guy from fbi) who passed information to Russia that lead to execution of the US agents.
If that new theory is true then Pollard's sentence is too harsh
