We really don't know the full extent of the killings yet. But from news reports I've read, almost every town had a government run torture chamber or two and all had unmarked graveyards nearby. Also, I've read the killings at these places were happening right up until U.S. troops arrived. I guess Saddam was doing a little "necessary" purging at the end. Last month or so, a mass grave of over 200 children was uncovered. Why is it of less import if it happened yesterday or ten years ago? You are suggesting that if Saddam was left in power, the killing would have stopped because he hadn't been butchering extravagantly lately. I don't agree, another ten years and the number of dead would have doubled, imo. Oh yeah, then his kids would take over, great.
