I imagine the the US has left a poor impression on the Asians, of all bray and no stay.
Viet-nam, Korea, Iraq/Kuwait - we gave up before the end and negotiated.
Therefore older types could argue that they can win (their positions) , even if suffering many casualties, where the young are normally unafraid anyway.
We are now attempting to change that impression, be more firm and consistent, which is not so easy while changing the Administration so often.
There is no option now but to stay in Afghanistan and Iraq and make sure we are perceived as winners, which makes it risky to leave Iraq in the hands of the UN without US overlook.
And to haul OBL and Saddam into court if they still exist
