The fireman would probably say so about the story on firemen.

<<The firehouse story is ironic because it is very likely to be true.>>
...Why is it likely to be true? Because it was posted on the internet and attributed to AP? Because firehouses burn down all the time?

<<0. Henry's tale or the firehouse burning down may not be something to laugh about immediately, but seeing a bit of the absurd in these events makes for bittersweet comedy.>>
...Clearly the O'Henry tale was not true but it is still irony and still funny - to most but not all.

NAACP and KKK -
...<<"Politics makes strange bedfellows -- and what could be stranger than the NAACP climbing into bed with the grand wizards of the KKK by supporting their racist agenda?" >>http://www.lp.org/press/archive.php?function=view&record=74
...(Yes, that made me laugh - at the libertarians for using such contorted logic. But maybe the NAACP isn't laughing?)

9-11 and Al Qaida -
...It is a sad irony that Al Qaida attacked the US because of it's alleged oppression of Muslims and the US responded by passing the Patriot act which was then used to oppress immigrant Muslims. (And yes - many of the 9-11 survivors supported said actions).

And how about those good Christian Right-to-Life'rs who go out and murder doctors? (I bet Jay Leno probably got some laughs with that one).

Yes, those are weak examples but what do you expect - irony on demand? By it's very nature, ironic events are rare and unusual.
...But they do happen. And if they don't strike to close to home they can be quite funny.
