When people live under dictatorships for more than one generation the culture is very entrenched. When they have suffered through lack of resources and watched their children and loved ones tortured to death, their perspective becomes tainted. When their only hope becomes, who they know that can win the dictator's positive influence, their view of life and survival is corrupted.

"How is this going to happen when the local people tend to revere the radical mullahs like Khomeini, et al.....??? Khomeini is very much revered in Najaf...."

The people in Iraq must be convinced that the American influence is more than a changing of the guards. Some of them are cooperating with us only because they see us as the new powers that be. When we leave they expect some sort of regime that we have endorsed to be in place. They have learned to play the game and kiss up to the ones who control resources. Others are cooperating with us because they believe a better life is promised, one that endorses justice and equality.

For real change to take place it must include a change in perspective by the Iraqi people. One that is founded on principle, not on who's favor they can garner. The brutal despotism of Saddam must be held up in juxtoposition against the ideals of justice, equality, and liberty. When/if people can get that, significant and radical change will take place.
