"Why do we need the death penalty?"

We are all going to die. I don't fear death nor do I consider it a punishment. It is the natural outcome of life and for a life well lived it is a positive outcome.

Punishment comes in the form of suffering through the process. Death, in some cases, is an end to suffering. In all cases it is resolute. Some suffering can be reconciled and resolved. When a raping, murderer commits unthinkable and brutally heinous crimes; society has no way to resolve the matter or establish reconciliation to the parties. In some cases the deed can not be undone or recompensed. Forgiveness is individual and not adjudicated.

"Have you considered how it has been wrongly used in the past? Have you considered why the death penalty is used against blacks and other minorities more than whites? Apparently whites murder in about the same proportion as blacks, but blacks get the death penalty more often..."

I have considered all of these things and until we have a higher standard of proof, I am withholding my support of the death penalty. I do, however, agree with the premise.

"...probably because they might be democrats I guess."

That comment is quite revealing...just another agendized cause. Why argue rationale at all. Why not just say rah rah democrat and list your agenda items.
