Well, yes, the US cannot just declare victory and pull out of Iraq without terrible consequences. Um, don't you think they realized this on the way in?

As for all this "if indeed the US is trapped in Iraq the way it was trapped in Vietnam" stuff, it's hooey. We began going into Vietnam in force in 1963 and 1964. People were talking about "trapped" by 1968, at which point we were losing about 40 American soldiers a day. This particular war started five months ago. So far we have suffered about 150 American casualties, total. Tragic for their families, but supportable for the US in a good cause. Isn't all the "trapped" rhetoric a wee bit premature? Isn't it just possible that Vietnam is not a useful analogy to the present situation - if Iraq is Vietnam, who is the USSR? who is China?
