John,

It would nice to see AMD return to profitability this year. The losses were narrowed in the last, the weakest quarter, and hopefully, the trend will continue next quarter, with lower loss and lower cash decrease, and in Q4, we should see Athlon64 contributing.

The dream scenario is repeat of what happened 4 years ago, with AMD having a capable processor and flash to supply, with PC and flash demand high.

Joe

"Is it just me or are things really starting to go right for AMD? What a difference from this time last year."

No, it's not just you...There are just too many converging positives for AMD's price to remain dormant much longer...Fuelling the converging positives is the fact that Opteron is an AMD innovation that, with its customer-centric approach, may well mark, with its rollout over the next several months, a paradigm shift in computing technology...No longer can it be suggested that AMD is piggybacking INTC's R&D efforts by producing an INTC clone...

The recent interviews with Dirk Meyer are well worth reading a number of times as the nuances contained therein surely underscore an "unstoppable" Opteron rollout until there are "Opterons everywhere", a rollout or transition that may take much less time than most currently anticipate...

I can't help thinking, with all the converging positives, that the days of AMD languishing in single digits are fast approaching an abrupt end...Not sure when the price spike occurs, but if the 2.0 GHz Opteron launch on Aug 4 dispels any performance/scalability issues, then that event might precipitate just such a spike!!! By the time AMD64 arrives on the scene in September, AMD be well into double digits!!!

To echo Joe, I think things going right implies making money. AMD ain't there yet. Relative to Intel, there is hope but not much in the way of profits.

If flash gets going, then profitability could arrive. Also Alchemy products could start to deliver some revenues. Also, if Intel Prescott really dissipates 100W, then AMD could make some headway.

But these are all "ifs" and "coulds". AMD is still a high risk gamble.
