I do believe that "it's about oil." It's not, of course, ALL about oil, but oil is clearly the driving force behind our interest in Iraq, our invasion of Iraq in the face of widespread worldwide opposition, including opposition from many of our allies, and our occupation and intent to "stay the course" in Iraq no matter the wishes of the Iraqis and the loss of life and money. Simply through the process of elimination, all of the other purported interests that we had in Iraq were contrived or could have been accomplished through covert means, political measures, or through the normal progression of the internal political processes in Iraq. Or not, without endangering American lives to the extent our invasion has, and will continue to. I disagree, however, that the driving motive was profit. It's true that the policy was promoted and formulated by oil people, but it's also true that there is a geo-political basis for believing that American CONTROL over the oil rich Mid-East is imperative if we are to continue to dominate the world politically, economically and culturally. If we lose this dominance over the next century, what will the "western democracy" dominance of the world be replaced with? What ideologies will grow in economic and military power to rival the U.S. as the world's lone superpower? Will this lead to world war? Are we willing to put our trust in the benevolence or peacefulness of another culture? Do the ends justify the means? These are tough questions but I don't think they should be answered by a group of men that made their fortunes in the oil business and that have shown that they are biased, crooked, and dogmatic in their thinking. But then I never thought that big oil should have been able to hand pick a slightly dim, easily manipulated, unimaginative and lightweight president. The reality is that they did and that they are pulling the strings. The sad thing is that the press and the American public are blindly nodding their heads to patriotically tinged, fear laden, 60-second, sound-bite messages that hide the truth. Where's the leadership from the opposition? Is there an opposition or have all the leaders bought into the hidden agenda? What good is a democracy if the primary communication goal of the government is to keep those that choose their leaders, ignorant of the real issues? Who knows.
