No, the difference between base and peak has to do with whether or not specific optimization flags have been set to produce the best spec code.

Since the Intel compiler is basically designed for nothing but producing Spec code, there is no need to set the compiler flags, its default is to produce code tuned for spec.

Those Itanium spec scores were pretty much hand tuned machine language targeted at the spec data and code, presented as though they represented typical performance on typical code and data.

It will be interesting to see Microsoft C++ code that hasn't been compiled with Intel's spec oriented plugin - just standard code that will represent the way Itanium will work on real world applications.
