Bank One Makes It Free to Pay Bills Online Wednesday July 30, 1:00 pm ET CHICAGO, July 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bank One (NYSE: ONE - News) today announced that most of its checking account customers will be able to pay their bills online for free, effective August 1. The service had been $4.95 a month. (Logo: newscom.com ) Free online bill pay is the latest enhancement for retail customers within the past year. Bank One introduced free e-mail alerts, a service that notifies customers of certain account transactions, nationally last month. Free checking and online check images were introduced last fall. The combination of offers makes Bank One the premier provider of free online banking services in most of the markets it serves. "Our research shows that online bill pay users are more loyal customers, which means they value this service. We want to make it more accessible," said Charles Scharf, CEO of Retail for Bank One. Bank One Online Bill Payment allows customers to initiate payments to any party as well as arrange for recurring, automatic payments of utilities or other bills directly from their bank accounts. Customers can also easily track or change payments online. The service will be free for all consumer checking accounts except Basic One. About 3.6 million Bank One checking accounts will be eligible, representing roughly 80% of checking account households. Of current online bill pay users: -- 60% are married, -- 50% are women, and -- 55% live three miles or more from a Bank One branch. "With free checking, free check images, free e-mail alerts and now free online bill pay, we have made our checking account offer an even better deal for customers," Scharf said. "We will continue to look for ways to offer our customers a maximum level of service and convenience, both online and in the branches."
