McCain has been quoted supporting Kerry, even recently in the Boston Herald. This is unprecedented for a top leader in the GOP to be singing praises of his president's number one contender during an election season.

McCain knows how potent he is in New Hampshire, knows Dean threatens Kerry in New Hampshire and therefore if McCain attacks Dean and praises Kerry he knows exactly what the effect will be. Independents and moderates in New Hampshire will have doubts about Dean.

Remember, everything these politicians say on talkshows with a few exceptions is very deliberate and designed to have a precise effect. When you see Ralph Reed praising Bush, he is parroting talking points from the WH. When you see Clinton supporting the war effort he is trying to hurt Dean and keep the Dems in a centrist mode to win in 2004 and when McCain says these things he is clearly trying to help his good friend John Kerry.
