You must be confusing me with someone else. The language is pretty much the same, although more compact as befits a summary. I said nothing about deterrence, earlier or now. I explained my reasoning for considering it a just penalty, which is quite a different thing, and pointed out that the citizenry trusts the system of justice only to the extent that it seems to have a reasonable rate of conviction and sentencing satisfying their sense of justice. Let me make it plain: I do not care if it is a deterrent.
