That's not the real correlation. The real correlation is race. There is a formula I once saw which provided factors for each race. Multiply the percent of white population by the white factor, black by the black factor, hispanic by the hispanic factor, etc, then add them together, deduct percentage for DP state, and you get the murder rate. It was accurate to within 3% of actual homicide rate for every state. Fascinating.
