I find that absolute levels in VIX aren't as useful for timing but rapid reversals are.

When the market isn't plummeting (on a long term basis, as it was, but hasn't been of late) a 5 period RSI of VIX is can be quite useful in plotting major turns.

Since the "news" today wasn't sufficient to scare enough shorts or bring enough buyers out, its certainly much more likely that the lower end of this trading range will now be tested.
