To use the phrases from the Aristole treatise I am reading,

The North Korean actions are not rational, but they are vitale. North Korea as a country, and the ruling family in particular, were on a course to extinction. The nuclear crisis makes them a force to be noticed, and once noticed there is the likelyhood that they will survive to implement whatever solution may be proposed for the crisis. If not, there is in reality little for the ruling family to lose. The George Bush pariah model of diplomacy does not lead to overtly rational behavior.
