Yes, I see your point. It is difficult to use the word 'respect' when considering, say, a vocal supporter of Saddam or Hitler. I'm not sure if we have many who would fit that category here; most people seem ordinary enough, some with extreme ideas, but not so much as to justify resorting to pointless name calling.

For example, many pro-lifers view pro-choice as murderers. However, as far as I can tell here, virtually screaming 'baby killer!' is not allowed or condoned. I believe that is so for a couple of reasons. First, it will simply cause all intelligent conversation to stop as people start to fling epithets. Second, I believe that some small majority will work themselves into a froth, and potentially threaten other members.

So, best to keep it civil, even if we vehemently disagree. On the positive side, keeping it lighter allows for a better acceptance of the other person's point of view. As I've said, I think the ultimate purpose of these boards should be education and exchange, not release of bottled venom.
