Navy Secretary Nominee Dies

President Submitted Name In May

POSTED: 10:05 p.m. EDT July 24, 2003
UPDATED: 10:12 p.m. EDT July 24, 2003

The Pentagon says President George W. Bush's choice to be Navy Secretary has died.

Bush had nominated New Mexico oilman Colin McMillan in May. He was to fill a post left vacant since January, when Gordon England left to become deputy secretary of the new Homeland Security Department.

Hansford Johnson has been serving as acting secretary.

A Pentagon spokesman confirmed McMillan's death but had no details of when or where.

McMillan was 67 at the time of his nomination in May. He lived in Roswell, N.M. He ran Permian Exploration Corporation, and was chairman of Bush's New Mexico presidential campaign in 2000.

McMillan ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 1994 against Democrat Jeff Bingaman.
