It's not stretched it hits home to the exact point of the exchange.

In any society the information needed to produce anything resides in all the individuals collectively and in written form. A handful of people, regardless of how smart or ingenious they are dropped on an island without communication or access to the accumulated knowledge of the society from whence they came would quickly exhaust their collective knowledge and revert to a fairly primitive lifestyle even if the resources of the island were quite diverse. ie. do you know how to make nails or how to make the machinery to make nails or even the method for turning ore into iron? The value resides within all of us and that value is only unleashed when people can communicate that knowledge with each other and the information has a higher value when it goes both ways and when the time lag is reduced.

What Heinz and Gilder did was to have an almost real time conversation about the value of technology and from that accumulated knowledge on both sides, others were able to make a more informed decision about where to put their resources. Had they had that conversation in their own individual heads it would have had zero value for anyone else. We'd have been the guys on the island without access to the accumulated knowledge therein. It just happens that the tool which they were arguing about was the one which made it possible for us to implement their ideas. I find that to be profoundly funny.
