Arc of Democracy - After a while people and/or special interest find they can 'vote themselves rich' without the system IMMEDIATELY collasping.

Argentina is a great example of this (with varying degrees of democracy) and the social welfare states of Europe also have this problem. The US is headed in that direction, becoming more ridgid, with parasitic interest groups like trial lawyers having excessive influence. Previously, large, more representative groups, like industrial labor unions, had more influence. This is why the US is heading the Japanese and European direction of greater economic rigidity.

Taiwan prehaps not a good example, but Korea and KDJ and the Chaebols is a well known story.

Weat Germany vs. East Germany is an even better illustration of democratic & capitalist results vs. state dictation from the top.

Some people in the Chinesse government are being VERY smart about economic development. The ruling saying that their oil companies could not have even a little price fixing is very wise.
