Great post! You dissected that sentence brilliantly.

What it comes down to is the statement is true on its face, but the meaning perceived by the public was utterly false.

Agreed.

Don,

I agree with Thomas M....

You've done an excellent job of ferreting out the weasel words in the White House's carefully crafted web of deception. Ted Olson and Alberto Gonzales should be proud of how well they've litigation proofed the lies. The sophistry and doublethink of the White House is its greatest achievement.

********
While researching Gonzales, I came across this recent pair of troubling articles on the shoddy disregard for life demonstrated by the man:

The degree of deception and the way you can see it clearly twisted backward time after time during the mess Bush has gotten us AND himself in is really foul
I would love to see that cross examination also on each and every quote and the progression of turning it inside out to eventually conceed that it was all propaganda and lies.

Once you overturn 500 years of international custom to create something called "preemptive war", anything is possible and nothing needs to be justified, except by the "trust me" slogan of Bush Inc.

Legalistic arguments were carefully used in Nazi Germany.

Acceptance of "preemptive warfare" means greater trust of gov't information, which will only be accomplished through transparency and disclosure. That's the real reason for the "16 words" flap. Not everyone is fooled quite yet.

At least, not until there's massive terrorism and deep depression, then you'll hear people start talking about how much they love our loving gov't and officials, who protect them, give them jobs, and treat them like the serfs they've become. The plan is to get everyone to hide in their houses, do what they're told, and line up for work duty at slave wages.

I see your point.

Better we should wait until another 9/11 happens....

YUCK!
