<The thing to understand is that everything, every technological progress is equal parts pleasure and pain.>

What?

< No one lives any better in any era than in any other era even while there is a huge discrepancy from one place on the planet to another.>

Huge leap... agree that it's probably not worth discussing because there is nothing but experience... data is meaningless.

< Who is to say spending the entire day plowing behind a draft horse is worse than spending 10 hours trying to repair your Windows installation? >

Agreed... all the wonderful numbers showing how better off the guy working behind the computer is better off are meaningless. He is also twice the weight and there is no real way of proving he's happier.

<it is the struggle to improve our existence which gives people purpose (other than their personal relationship with God and family). >

"Improving our existance" could mean anything. Many take it to mean in a material way. For many that may be true, but I certainly wouldn't generalize, it's not true for me. In fact, I'd go so far as to say those who's life is given meaning by improving their material surroundings are by definition suffering.
