Throughout the long 20th. century history of American foreign policy... I believe you will find *numerous* instances when we *didn't* support our national principles, or what was in our own long-term interests.

Pretty much all policy with regard to Iran or Iraq from the '50s through the '80s could safely be deprecated... to take just two examples from many.
