LIVING HISTORY : Future US President ?

I want to express my thoughts on the book “LIVING HISTORY” (author : Hillary Clinton) from the angle, how far it was essential to write this book. The leaned persons write books such that people can acquire knowledge. This is not that type. It is not a fiction either. There are numerous sources that say how things happen in the white house and around. Information presented in LH are not dependable even. Some people write books for earning money. The author of LH is not in that state. Some write to become famous, the author is already famous. So, the natural question is, what prompted the author to write this book ?

The simple answer that even a boy knows (be it a fact or not) is, she wants to become US president. Whoever may like it or not, the author is free to do it. But as soon as some one writes with this secret intention in mind, she places her ‘work’ to have been evaluated by another criteria. This criteria is, the work reflects the minds and capability of future US president. By this time we know, the US president is the most important person in this world. And knowing his/her mind and capability is the sacred duty for all. By that consideration the book will dishearten any reader, whether at home or abroad. How can a person of that status present such untrue information ? How can the writings of the man of that level be so ‘easy going’ ? How can his/her vision be so ‘short’ ? Why is this ‘popularity-earning’ tendency in his/her writing ? Where is the depth of thinking of a president ?

And there are more important questions also. The author’s husband’s tenure, specially during the closing years were full of events with crucial importance. At that juncture the author played significant role. This book could have been an attempt to present logical explanations to those of her activities. Unfortunately, the accounts presented in the book not only failed to justify those activities, on the other hand turned some more ‘hilarious’ (sorry, no relation with Hillary). The more the book will be read all over the world the more people will feel, they want to see a much better and more responsible person as the US President.

One of the most 'vanilla' books ever written by any politician anywhere. I don't like-but respect-Senator Clinton. However, this book is not only completely bland but questionable in its veracity.

The events listed in the book have been chronicled in other books and with investigators. why does Hillarys accounts differ from everyone elses? I just cant recommend this book to anyone. I used to be a hillary fan. I am tired of all of the lies.

If you are expecting a politician to candidly put his/her ideas in a book, you should wait until that person is no longer in politics.

Senator Clinton plays it very safe and because of her partial candor, the book falls short of an engaging biography.

Typically Clintonesque, self-serving distortion of the facts, July 8, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from Mead, CO United States
Hillary is in denial. The way she describes her "history" in the White House is typical of the political spin that the public was subjected to during the Clinton administration. She would have us believe that everything that went right with the country during that time was attributable to she and Bill, and everything that went wrong was at the hand of the Republicans, past and present. The book will be welcomed by those who wish to reinforce their belief that Hillary has been misunderstood, unfairly treated, and subjected to undue harassment by her enemies.

Where's the Candor?, July 6, 2003
Reviewer: wrothberg64 (see more about me) from New York, NY USA
I didn't expect much from this book, but I still expected much more than I got. I'm a New Yorker who voted for Senator Clinton because I agreed with her politics. I have always been of the opinion that her husband is a heroic adulterer, but that this part of his life was not a reason to vote against - let alone impeach - him. (If we got rid of adulterous politicians, the Capitol building would be mostly empty of them.)
I bought the book based on news reports that, in it, Senator Clinton was "remarkably candid," but, instead, she plays it safe, pulls her punches, and presents a view of her marriage that is not very believable. I believe that Senator Clinton is a highly intelligent woman, and no highly intelligent woman could believe that the former President has been a mostly faithful husband, who briefly strayed with Ms. Lewinsky.
It all makes for a dull read. I guess we'll have to wait for her to be out of politics and divorced before we get some real candor out of her.

Maybe she should have tried writing this book herself or hired some writers who could give some life to this extremely dull read. I understand that when you're in office you can't afford to offend anyone, but please give us something interesting. There is nothing at all new in this book that hasn't been written about before. Whatever one thinks of the politics of Mrs. Clinton, surely they would agree that she's lived an interesting life, worthy of a bio. Revisionist history? Yes, probably to some extent, but aren't all autobiographies?

The first half provided some new insights and was very interesting; the second half just seemed to restate facts. All in all, still an enjoyable listen. I heard the unabridged Audible version, read by the author. --This text refers to the Audio Cassette edition.

Some people have faulted this book by saying that Hillary skirted some of the issues, like Gennifer Flowers. Folks, she's already publicly addressed many of these issues and didn't want to tell the story twice.

As a person with an admittedly private side, Hillary gave her best shot at this one while still being careful and protective of her family.

She's a lot warmer here than she sometimes comes across on TV. I've met her personally, where she is warmer still.

It's a memoir, not a textbook, July 5, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from Oak Park, IL USA
Memoirs are, ALWAYS, selective and one-sided. Who among us has 20/20 hindsight and complete objectivity about our own lives? This book must be judged as a MEMOIR, not as a scholarly examination of a Presidency. Unlike Dallek's great book on JFK or McCullough's on Truman, Sen. Clinton does not have the benefit of objectivity or decades of perspective on decisions that were made in the not-that-long-ago 1990s. To call her book "dishonest" is ingenuous. If, for example, Frank McCourt's brothers remember the incidents in ANGELA'S ASHES differently than he does, is he a "liar?" I'm also confused by all these uncredited allegations of ghostwriters. I haven't read them regarding this book anywhere but on this board. Who says the book is ghostwritten, and how objective is that source? As you can see from some of the more vitriolic reviews on this board, Sen. Clinton and her husband are polarizing figures, to say the least. Such uncredited allegations just give credence to her claims that there are factions "out to get" the Clintons.

Perhaps the greatest legacy of the Clintons will be their inability to discern truth from falsehood and their pathology in believing that the means justifies the ends. This diatribe in nothing but an attempt to whitewash the 8 years of corruption of the Clinton administration. Never has evil been wrapped in such a beautiful package.

Book Achieves Its Low Objectives, July 4, 2003
Reviewer: Robert D. Steele (see more about me) from Oakton, VA United States

I happen to feel that Hillary Clinton is one of the best female leaders in America, so I bought the book hoping for the best. I was disappointed. The book achieves what strike me as its rather low objectives: showcase the earnest persistent attractive self--tell the story as blandly as possible while avoiding any of the really hard issues, like why Bill had to look for satisfaction elsewhere.

Of note, from a national security point of view, was the complete lack of reference to intelligence as in CIA, terrorism, analysis, or anything resembling attention to the facts. As an intelligence professional, if Hillary were to be elected President, I would worry about her appointing her hair dresser as Director of Central Intelligence. [Henceforth, I will evaluate every Washington biography for its attention to intelligence--looking back over several hundred such biographies I was struck by how few--George Shultz being the exception--actually discuss national intelligence and its role--or failure--within the national decision making process.]

Over-all, this book is a fast read and if you like Hillary, you will love the book, if you hate her sight unseen you will not like the book. What disappointed me most was that it is not the kind of analytical "what went wrong, what did I learn, what would I do if I were president" read that I was hoping for. Although she lightly dissects the failure of her health care reform initiative and the terribly unjust impeachment of Bill Clinton, I walk away from this booking thinking "great personality, but no architecture for the future."

Let's not try to insert our own political agendas . . ., July 2, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from Chicago, IL
into our reviews and take the book for what it is . . . an autobiography. Is it self-serving? You bet. (But who wouldn't write a self-serving autobiography?) Is it a terrible read? Not by a long stretch. It was written at a level for anyone to read, however, she did not shy away from discussing in intelligent, detailed terms, some of the more complicated subject matter (health care, whitewater), which I respected. Those who picked up the book to get the goods on Monica will end up coming away more enlightened about politics and our government in general after reading it. Good. If there's one thing the book achieved, and achieved well, it was to cast the controversy regarding her persona during the White House years in a less controversial light. She says that she is neither as good nor as bad as people think she is. I think that's probably true, as it's true of most people. You end the book thinking less that HRC is some shrewd monster who would give her right arm to be First Lady (which I never believed anyway), but rather, she, and Bill for that matter, are your typical Ivy League-educated overachievers who had the backgrounds and the abilities to get into the White House -- and that HRC was skewered for being the first First Lady to have actually achieved more in her life than perfecting how to pour tea at ladies' luncheons. Give the book a chance.

A Good 1st Lady Memoir - That's It; That's All!, July 2, 2003
Reviewer: ceruleana (see more about me) from New York, NY USA
Hillary Rodham Clinton states in her Author's Note, at the beginning of "Living History," that she is writing a personal memoir, not a comprehensive history. If you want to relax and dig in for a fascinating, insightful read, then it is important to accept her statement/disclaimer. Do not expect more from the book than a well written memoir. Hillary was, after all, the First Lady, and this is her unique, nontraditional take on her time in that position. I do hope that someday, when Senator Clinton retires from politics and gains more of a historical perspective, she will take on the task of authoring a comprehensive analysis of the Clinton Administration. That is a book I will really look forward to reading.

Senator Clinton, a woman of my generation, writes with intelligence, wit, sensitivity and lots of savvy, about the experiences in her life that made her the woman she was on January 20, 1993, when she moved to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. It is important to understand who she was then, the product of an amazing time in history, especially for American woman, in order to appreciate just how unique she was as she began her White House years. As a woman - wife, mother, professional and a daughter of the '60s - Hillary came to the White House with the education, potential, goals (her husband's and her own), and ambitions that were totally unlike those of any First Lady before her. We catch a glimpse of the young woman who was the first student to speak at a Wellesley graduation - and who received kudos to boot. I appreciate and admire that particular early accomplishment and how hard she must have worked, scholastically and with student government, to be invited by her peers to speak. How many young women...or men...did any of us know in 1969 who could have delivered such an address to such an exacting audience? The accuracy with which she describes the issues and conflicts of the time, i.e., Vietnam, civil rights, political activism, the Equal Rights Amendment, brings back the period with all its upheaval, innocence and idealism. Hillary was a political activist, working within the system for changes that would benefit a majority of Americans, even in high school. She entered Yale Law School, when female matriculation was still a rare occurrence. During her early career she focused on children's advocacy, reform for migrant workers, education, and healthcare. In her twenties, Hillary was already a person with strong convictions, making and living history.

I enjoyed her account of her courtship with Bill, and do give him credit that he had the sense to stick with her and not select the Miss America figure that his Mom seemed to expect. From the get go, this was a couple that did well together. They were very attracted to each other, yes...and more importantly, their minds meshed.

Her account of the Health (insurance) Task Force, which she headed is disappointing. As Chairperson, she received a major appointment in President Clinton's administration, and I did expect a meatier description of the job, her duties, pitfalls, successes and failures...and, of course, the results.

Her anecdotes of foreign travel, especially the conference in China, and her take on the heads of state who came to the White House during her time as official hostess, make for interesting reading.

Many have faulted Senator Clinton for forgiving her husband, and working to rebuild their marriage and relationship. Her reasons for sticking with Bill are very moving and make perfect sense to me.

When the former First Lady was interviewed on the Today Show, years ago, and talked about the "vast right-wing conspiracy," many called her paranoid and naive. Now, though she admits that "conspiracy" was not the most appropriate word, she sticks to her guns. She believes that there is a powerful and moneyed right-wing element in our country who wants to impose their political agenda on America. They spend their money, not by publicly debating issues of national importance, but by spreading scandal and destroying personal and professional reputations, at times using little more than rumor for their reality base. Although the "politics of personal destruction" had been employed long before the Clintons came on the scene, the radical conservative movement took these politics to a new high...or perhaps low is the better word... during the Clinton administration. The result was millions of US tax dollars spent trying to prove that the Clintons were guilty of illegal activities. None of the accusations proved true. Many years and investigations later, I believe that the country, and probably the Clintons, are still exhausted by all the needless vitriol.

I accept that both Hillary and Bill Clinton are super controversial figures. Yes, folks tend to either love them or hate them. Both are talented, intelligent, human beings, who sought public office to serve their country. In a democracy one does not have to agree with their political or personal philosophies. Just vote no...or yes, as the case may be.

Finally, I have read commentaries that state this memoir is lacking, because Senator Clinton did not add lurid details to her book or discuss events that have already been written about and discussed, ad nauseum. Baloney!! If you are interested in the White House Years during the Clinton Administration from the First Lady's point of view, a woman who redefined the position of presidential spouse, then you will enjoy "Living History." I did.

Well-timed Account may Help with the Coming Election, July 2, 2003
Reviewer: rmac1117 (see more about me) from Cherry Valley, Ma United States
No matter how many or few co-authors she may have employed for her book, Hillary may have just picked the most opportune time to steer undecided minds toward clearer reality for the 2004 Election, and allow this society to emerge from under the shroud of Republican doldrums. In early chapters, she describes GOP follies such as the Whitewater witch-hunt, the attempted Newt coup-d'etat, the impeachment circus, and the plundering of the health-care system & environment, with a clarity they'd never let on to public knowledge. Also not to be overlooked is the overall floundering of the economy under such plutocratic policies, and how effective simple solutions such as luxury taxes can be.

...BR>(And just maybe, all their votes would actually COUNT...!)

For anyone thinking that is all that is here, later chapters cover world-wide inadequacies, such as uncivilized societies that treat their women as pariahs, with similar stark descriptions; also subjects which must first be brought to the surface so that people are aware, before there's any hope of rectification. I also recommend the 2 recent Gore Vidal commentaries, and "Best Democracy Money Can Buy" as companion volumes.

Those who read Hillary's book with few objectives other than fault-finding will yap the loudest, blind to reason before beginning. I vote at every opportunity, and I'm not considered a "liberal" or anything similar.

Oh my God! I could only force myself to read the first few chapters and skim a few of the others. The writing was terrible! It was written like "It was a dark and stormy night" prose. If you are going to hire 4 writers, then at least hire GOOD ones. Give me a break with writing like "I was gasping for air"..come on! And all the name-dropping too. "Me and Mandela..." and "I got a standing ovation". and "me...me..I...I.." What an ego. It was like an 8th grade novel writing contest entry. I only read about 100 pages. Give me a break!, July 1, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from U.S. Army, Germany
I made an honest effort at reading this thing. I was really hoping to get some insight at what makes a person like this successful. If she really believes the things that she has said or says enough to gain the misguided trust of the left and launch herself into power. I was disappointed on all fronts.

Nothing new, more of the same, and typical ... Clinton attempt at the truth. Anyone who reads this with a knowledge of the events as they unfolded or an intuition of self-righteous writing will see that in a second. The only thing that can be gained here is more people seeing through this woman in her own words and her dishonesty. Hopefully this book will end her political career before it goes any further.

I never really considered myself on the left, but after reading this, perhaps I have been on the wrong side of politics if this person is the "up and coming star" of the Democratic party.

Save your money

Just finsihed reading Living History and I enjoyed the book because it gave me an insight into Hillary and her life. I had no idea that she was raised a Republican and was a Goldwater Girl in college. Her travels around the world on behalf of women's rights are perhaps, the most interesting part of the book for me. For eight years she spoke in front of groups on all the continents from China to India to Africa and everywhere in between. I don't think a First Lady since Eleanor Roosevelt has been such an ambassador, especially in countries where women are treated as second class citizens. It's a good read.

... I bought and read the book out of curiosity and without a strong opinion (positive or negative) of Hillary Clinton. After actually reading the book, I discovered how admirable she is. In fact, her book is a substantial record of how she swam against a very strong tide in her work to provide all people with health care (and is glad she tried even though she failed), worked to protect the human rights of women and children in our country and around the world.... on the Clinton record, these are not "lies." ...

Behind the scenes of living history, June 30, 2003
Reviewer: Annabelle Reeve from Seattle WA United States
This book was painful trip to the recent past. We had a shiny new president who was brilliant, loved people and had a mission to get the country back on track, yet his every accomplishment was poisoned by the ruthless efforts of the Republican leadership to make sure he didn't have a second term. And as we all know, in the end he was brought down in humiliation for behavior that is historically common in the corridors of power. Hillary's book details those frustrating times, sets the record straight for all those who would believe the lies and support the fruitless investigations. I am not intimidated by a woman of intelligence and power--too bad so many people are. She is a credit to our race.

Hillary haters go home, June 30, 2003
Reviewer: A reader from Chelsea, MA United States
I was never a Hillary hater, but I was never a Hillary lover either. This book has given me a new found appreciation for Senator Clinton.

Welcome to Hillaryland (Its in the book), this book will give you access to the first ladies life. It may be biased on her behalf, but what do you expect, after all if you wanted to see an expose theres well over 20 books on this subject. If your looking for sex drugs and rock@roll then you have the wrong book, this is a rated G performance so feel free to let the children take a look.

The number one reason why you should buy this book is the price. The books are flying off the shelves, and yet you can get a first print at [money].
The number two reason is the pictures. Some people age very well, and Hillary is one of those people. Actually looking at her extensive collection of pictures it can be said that she makes a better middle aged woman then a woman in her 20's (If you dont believe me look at the pictures)
The third is for her point of view. Why do we place blame on Senator Clinton? If blame is to be handed out her husband is the one to blame for his own infidelity and so forth.

Reviewer: A reader from Harrisburg, PA
The rule of which I speak is that a sitting politician can hardly ever write a truly interesting book about their life.

A more dull book is hard to imagine. For one thing, she should have gotten much better ghost writers. A lot of the time, the book reads like a term paper ("What I did for eight years in the White House"). Everyone knows that it was (hopefully) a lot more interesting than this book relates. This point in and of itself makes this book pretty worthless.

i borrowed this book from my sister. she fancies herself a democrat and hillary fan, but could only make it through around 70 pages. i'll let her write her own review, but the reason she so generously dumped this volume on me is that she couldn't stomach the content, or the writing style. she normally reads novels, and fast paced, mystery types at that. its not difficult to figure out why she didn't enjoy this one....its boring. it does have some redeeming value(s) however, and that's why i rated it two stars. i enjoyed this, not unlike the typical person enjoying a train wreck, primarily due to curiosity. if you are a political science buff, like myself, you should read it for educational purposes. it is a brilliant study in "spin science". h's team of ghost writers have created a virtual test tube laboratory of "spin" (formally termed "propaganda"). examples of impactful "spin mastering" are abundant in bookstores, especially since the coming and passing of the clinton presidency. minimizing the impact of presidential scandal, as clinton fans would quickly point out, is an art that has existed for over a century. this was not unique to the clinton regime. the level of it, however, is a different matter. the clintons (including the author) became so expert in rationalization and fact twisting that they elevated General Public "duping" to a remarkable level. this book is a bold example of this phenomena. mrs. clinton's hired writers appear uninterested in plausability, bashing through the pages with falsehood after falsehood. uniquely, they do this with perceived immunity, knowing full well that the clinton sub-culture has already forgiven bill and hillary for all of their transgressions anyway. at any rate, the book is an exceptional example of how the right book, at the right time, with the right audience can actually re-write history. i believe that is the purpose of mrs. clinton's effort, she seeks to sanitize a rather untidy past. this lengthy volume should also prove fascinating to those in the mental field(s) as it clearly illustrates two in-vogue concepts; self delusion and denial. the senator from new york, once again brings these normally benign leanings to a new level. i'll wrap this up. this book is a great read for the above reasons. you cannot read it without experiencing amazement. what a great coincidence, it being released at the same time as the summer's other great fantasy (H. Potter). i rate it only two stars, though, because, as the title suggests, it's supposed to be about history. there is little history in this. as other reviewers have pointed out, many much better than i, this is fiction. but give the former first lady her due, she spins her tale with no reservation, with no apparent sense of conscience or respect for accuracy. you have to salute her for her brashness and outright boldness. you don't see that every day.
