Heard on the Beat: Rumors revisited at Semicon

Semiconductor Business News

Top rumors at Semicon
During last week's Semicon West trade show, it seemed like there were more rumors and gossip than actual buyers of capital equipment.
One of the better rumors at the show was a deal reportedly cooking between Applied Materials Inc. and Brooks Automation Inc. Under the rumored plan, Applied and Brooks would form a joint venture to develop wafer-handling equipment. Brooks is walking a tight rope if the plan is true--the company also sells wafer-handling gear to Applied's competitors, such as KLA-Tencor, Novellus, and others.

At every Semicon in recent times, there are rumblings on the show floor that Novellus Systems Inc. and Lam Research Corp. will merge. This year was no different, but as usual, it was mere talk than action.
