interior as prosperous as the coastal regions ?

Back in the days when the UK manufactured stuff, the city of Birmingham was about as busy and prosperous as things got. The citizens of Birmingham are about as far from the sea as you can go in the UK, yet they "manufactured everything from hat pins to battleships". That phrase was used by my grand parents who lived there.

The reasons for this are many fold. Transport of heavy goods was a problem, but solved by digging canals. The intricate system of canals is still there, on several levels. There is even canal "flyovers" believe it or not.

Now of course it's famous for Spaghetti Junction and the monitoring of lead in kids from the car fuel.
