And if a raccoon is "friendly" there might be something wrong with it- like rabies. You simply can't tell some people anything- and if they were Middle Eastern it is possible that they wouldn't want to take advice from a woman they do not know. It's always hard to understand other cultures, and I don't totally understand the depth of insecurity some cultures feel toward women, and the losing face thing- but both these seem to be very powerful elements in some cultures.

hello karen-

we ask that visitors not feed the
racoons in stanley park, not because
they are unfriendly - they are very
friendly - but because it is to their
disadvantage to become dependent on
humans for food. they will become
quite bold. one walked through
my neighbour's pet door, looking
for dog kibble. it can be somewhat
disconcerting to see a racoon at your
dog's dish when you come down for breaky
in the morning <g>

i'm pleased that you enjoyed your vancouver
experience.
