Oh, I doubt it. He dissed my motives in his last post to me so I thought I'd return the favor. Regardless of what SR personally thinks, it is true that some on the left side of our society did welcome and celebrate the communist victory in VN. The feeling that the better side won in VN is strong on the left.

The Left, today, is almost wholly anti-authoritarian. It is firmly opposed to American imperialism (as they see it), and equally opposed to communism, fascism, and islamism.

Opposed to American "imperialism" sure. But I don't see the opposition to communism or islamism. I see toleration and sympathy with the views of communists and islamists.

..the Communists came to power, largely because they championed the nationalist cause. If the U.S. had helped the nationalists,..

I know that was what he was saying. He even voiced approval for military intervention in 1945. I just don't see any reason to believe the point.

And actually, that's kind of how we got into the VN war - we were after all supporting a non-communist nationalist govt against takeover by communists. And it was liberals who got us involved there. I see no reason to think the result have been different in 1945.

Right on: "We lost, because we opposed nationalism, and that is an irresistable force in global politics.

And, today, if we let the Islamists be the champions of Iraqi nationalism, then our defeat is certain."
