Kevin,

Re: So, it is hypocracy, or pragmatism?

In statecraft, it is called realpolitik, a fancy name for hypocrisy.

Re: We cooperated with the Soviets in WWII, even though we knew Stalin to be evil.

Stalin said the same as he watched the U.S. and the UK sit happily and cozily in England while the U.S.S.R. suffered the greatest cost in human life in the war from 1942 until the very tardy D-Day invasion in June, 1944, after the Wehrmacht's strength was guaranteed to be sapped.

Re: We supported repressive regimes across the world in the bid to hold back the 'red scourge'.

You're good at regurgitating propaganda. Look beneath the surface and you'll see in every instance of U.S. foreign adventurism that our military and/or CIA have been sent to do the enforcement work for the banks and largest corporate interests in America. Lt. Gen. Smedley Butler USMC (ret.) understood this very well in the years before WW II:

Re: So, what about the Saudis?

A red herring. The Bushies are the real terrorists that Americans should be investigating.

Re: The question is: is it more important to be right, or to do the right thing?
The answer is entirely dependent upon your socio-economic status.
