spoke with my daughter today.

she's working for the dept of parks
and recreation in vancouver - oppenhiemer
park to be exact.

it's not your typical park.

first thing she does on her shift is
don a pair of plastic gloves, pick up
a pair of tongs and clears the area of
used needles and condoms. but she is
loving her work - it is her function to
bring "art to the park" and she does that
very well.

there is a great sense of community among
the users of the park - it's shared by local
seniors, local alcoholics, local druggies and
a playground for local preschoolers ... all
disenfranchised. they all keep to their own
area of the park - except for the outsiders.

her dad had lunch with her yesterday and
she relayed a story. the other day, she
noticed a 'guy' eyeing the kids. she approached
him and stood in front of him between him and
the children and started a conversation so he
would have to acknowledge her. he became
confrontational and aggressive - she backed
off. she looked beyond him and saw a street
worker who indicated she was aware of what was
happening. as the 'guy' become more aggressive,
the 'street worker' intervened and stepped between
them elbowing him a good one in the stomach so
he buckled over. my daughter told him he'd have
to leave or she'd call the police - he left.

my daughter thanked the woman for coming to her
assistance. they both introduced themselves and
the woman said, "that's okay. he couldn't have
done anything to me that hasn't been done already".

we have such a long way to go in this society
to make sure our most vulnerable are kept safe.

.. just sort of ramblin'
