Malcolm, yes, history is complicated and it can't be unwound, primarily because almost nobody is alive from the 19th century, let alone nearly everyone alive now was born in the second half of the 20th century.

But subjugated people can be freed. Which means having a referendum on what they'd like to do. Which is a bit problematic in that some people are sitting on a gold mine and it would be unreasonable for them to vote to secede and form a country 10 km in diameter for the primary purpose of looting the rest of the community.

The Kurds and the rest in Iraq are in that sort of situation.

I dare say that they held a referendum in Beijing on whether they were part of China, the answer would be yes, and quite resoundingly so.

A referendum on whether Hu Jintao is the legitimate boss would be interesting. I suspect he'd do okay.
