It's funny cause I am having the same exact problem running a machine on XP. Suddenly my drive can not be used and asks if I want to format. I had been using this drive as the storage for my documents and now I can't use it. I can see and copy everything in DOS. It's just too weird. I wonder why this has happened. I've even tried moving the IDE cables from the hard disks to the CDroms and vice versa but nothing. There has to be a reason unless it's a motherboard failure or something.
