It's not about "accepting" beliefs. My job is not to accept or reject the beliefs of my students (unless those beliefs involve believing in bad grammar, or poor spelling- then I do need to express some opinion). Beliefs outside the area of the standards which I teach, are not in my purview. I hope all my students learn from my example that a committed liberal humanist might behave in the manner I do. If I have a little Coulter in my class, she will find that I honor her with the same respect as a human being that I give to everyone else. She might figure out that her beliefs are not my beliefs, but by the end of the year she would know that I would not grade her down on her beliefs, but only on her English.

Ultimately none of us can really fairly decide what "beliefs" go beyond the pale- imo- because that is such a subjective decision. Certain actions are illegal, but so far we do not have thought police to tell us that our beliefs and thoughts are. I hope it never comes to that either- because I don't trust anyone with that power, even myself- and I consider myself a pretty benign and tolerant authority figure.
