Moribund regions? You think Iran (for example) is moribund? What would vivibund (my word, I made it up) look like I wonder. We disagree that the ME is moribund. What I think should be done in the region varies enormously country to country, and has nothing to do with stimulating change. It is not a monolithic area, and I would not treat it as such, and I don't think it is any of our business stimulating the area. The countries there have the right to change, if the populations want to change. Change pushed from outside, is often a push in the wrong direction. The US's ability to align itself with the wrong side in such pushes, is truly spectacular (imo). Now I see no harm in furthering certain of our interests, peacefully, through trade and aid. And imo it would have been cheaper to be benevolent with aid, than to have this war- but now we've got the war, I don't think we can afford anything like the aid I think is necessary. Of course we won't be able to do much pushing either. If it were me making decisions, I'd not want my actions to look anything like pushing change. Very few countries want to be pushed to change, especially by the US.
