So den Beste thinks the Islam militants are angry at the US because they come from such an underachieving culture?

Isn't that rather Americentric logic?

Well yes, but it's fair to say that globalization, and Hollywood, are pushing our success in their faces in an unaccustomed fashion. It's hardly news to most Arabs that their societies are underachieving - in some of the polls I've seen, half of the young people say they would like to emigrate.

I didn't agree with everything he said (notably analysis of why we invaded is incomplete) but the part about what sticks in the craw of Muslims seems accurate. The culture just has not lived up to its past performances as a leading edge in human civilization in recent years, to put it mildly. Living in the past has never paid off, and if there is anything that will doom a culture to failure, that is one of them. The Asians will leave them far behind as the world economic powerhouse of the future in this century, and by the time they realize this it will really be too late.
