It could also be a screensaver or maybe a scheduled task such as an automatic update on one of your installed programs. Try running defrag from within safe mode. Your setup may differ but you can frequently boot to safe mode by restarting and hitting the F8 key during the boot process. Last time I did it I think it was immediately after the beeps during the post test.

If you are using it make sure you have a backup ISP . I have had several instances of it dis-appearing. It comes back but... support may or may not have any idea about what is going on. Longest outage was two days but shorter losses occur fairly regularly. May just be this area -D.C. suburb with lots of new housing going up within 5 miles but who knows. Dial up is slow but it is better than nothing. <g>
