I think you put way too much faith in our little despot imposing his political "vision" on the various parts of the world. The empires of the past have all failed, I don't think your American Empire will fare any better.

It is self defense, any way you look at it. The entire region hates the United States, basically because they are jealous of us and have had their dignity destroyed by the dictatorships in which they live. This is THE REASON 9/11 happened. No other reason.

If you give them their freedom, you give them dignity. If you give them democracy, you give them the opportunity to create something for themselves in their own part of the world. They don't need to strike out against us because the envy is gone.

Plus, it's mighty expensive. One clear reason we can't fix social security is that we are spending vast sums, driving up the deficit, to support colonialism.

You're naive. All the money spent on our "colonialism" won't make a dent in the giant liberal ponzi scheme known as Social Security.

It was only a couple of years ago that Greenspan was testifying before congress about the difficulties the government would have dealing with the massive surplus, how to invest it without favoring one industry over another

What do you think happened to that "surplus"? It evaporated when the economy tanked at the end of the Clinton administration. One thing will get the "surplus" back: A strong economy. Spending has little to do with it.

Also, let's be careful not to mis-state the facts. The "surplus" gave no account to the HUGE accrued deficit in the Social Security Trust Fund. Had that deficit been taken into account, there would not have been a "surplus" at all. It is bookkeeping trickery. And your government is great at it. Bush tried to fix it, the Dems stopped him dead in his tracks.

I appreciate all you're saying; I just think you have a rather naive view of the world.

JF, The rest of the world doesn't share your optimism. What if they are right, you are wrong?

Right about what? That sanctions and inspections were working and needed to continue, or that sanctions and inspections were too inhumane and needed to be lifted?
