The "effect" of Gingrich's opinion on Gingrich hardly goes to tell whether or not he was a "patriot". Opposing everything any government did could be highly patriotic, if you thought the government was wrong (which no doubt Newt did)- thus people opposing the Bush administration, and people opposing the Clinton administration, are probably equal in their level of zealous commitment to their (no doubt) patriotic goal of complaining about a corrupt and wrong headed administration. The administration is not America- it is simply an administration that some group feels is not living up to the American ideal they envision.

I get the feeling you totally missed my point. If you accept that the administration at any particular time is not America- then opposing it is never unpatriotic. Whether opposition "undoes" you or not, is not relevant to the point.
