I've never had cable internet but I am a big fan of DSL. Check with your dsl provider and have them test your line. Ask them what the maximum speed would be that they would offer you. They offer up to 7.5 MBPS in some cases, but only if you are close enough to a central office. You won't want to pay for the higher speed (about $400/mo) and you won't need it but if it is available, you can expect a very solid connection at lower speeds. I have 786 kbps download and it is plenty fast and consistently so.

When I had @HOME I would get over 2MBPS during the day.At night it would slow down to dial up speed.
When Comcast took over they capped speed at 1.5MBPS and I get that 24 hours/day.No slow down.

If your cable TV is out often then your internet will be also.I my area we seldom go down.
