Have you heard the term "hostile work environment"? Many factors contribute to such an environment and it is often up to the courts to determine if it exists. I can assure you that your HR person doesn’t want to waste his legal department's time by dealing with your one off color joke or your letter, but the point was made and done so correctly.
There are those that still think that having separate laws and facilities for non-whites is a good idea, but most of us can see and understand the harm that a hostile work or living environment has on society, both financially and in how it impacts the lives of those that are discriminated against. Is telling an off color joke so important to you or are there other factors that push your behavior? Those that stand by and allow others to chip away at the dignity of an individual or a group are as guilty of bigotry as those that commit overt crimes. Your dirty jokes in a work place have an agenda behind them. Why else would you risk your job and pay for legal fees, just to tell an off color joke? I’m sure that my comments are waste of time but I thought I’d try.
