Japan's equipment b-to-b ratio hits 1.57, says report

TOKYO -- June's global orders for Japanese semiconductor manufacturing equipment rose 6.3 percent from a year earlier to 91.48 billion yen (about $760 million) on brisk demand from domestic chip makers, according to a Dow Jones report issued Tuesday (July 29, 2003) that cited industry data.

The order volume was down from May's value of 98.84 billion yen (about $830 million) but was the first year-on-year gain in four months the report quoted the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan as saying.

The book-to-bill ratio for Japanese equipment, computed as a three-month moving average, was 1.57 in June, up from 1.04 in May, from 0.78 in April and 0.71 in March, the report said.

"It seems like Japanese chip makers in particular are trying to increase capital spending," Dow Jones quoted Hitoshi Owada, a director of ATE company Advantest, as saying.
