One way to circumvent NAFTA is the present US embargo of Canadian beef and the imposed tarrif on Canadian lumber.

There was one case of mad cow disease and it was just enough to keep Canadian beef from entering US. The infected cow happened to be from an American cow that was moved to Canada. Despite finding no other cattle infected with the disease, boycott of Canadian beef continues. Of course it is great to the US cattle ranchers.

Canadian lumber is imposed a sufficiently high tarrif that it is not competitive. Canadian lumber is accused of being "subsidized".

It is vengeance and punishment for Canada's not supporting the Iraq venture. This is despite Canada's support for Afghanistan operation. Almost 30% of Canada's military personnel is in Afghanistan.

So much for the free trade borders. The south border is still open because of the hispanic population and the corresponding size of the hispanic vote.
