Thanks for the recommendation. I've got books to take back to the library today- and I'll see if they have that book.

This is an older book called --->"Seven Years in Tibet "
amazon.com

written about the true life experiences of one German Mt climber and a fellow German Lieutenant that escaped the British war camps they were in , and made their way fleeing thru india north to Tibet .

Written by Heinrich Herrer , who had climbed the Matterhorn finally which had been forbidden to climb for all the mountaineers who up til then had died trying , til he managed to scale it's peak at last , being the first man to do so in Europe ...and quite famous for doing so. He was on his way back then to climb Everest when the War II broke out and he was thrown in a camp in India by the Brits...

What makes this story interesting is he later comes to Lhasa thru the trek away from captivity, and becomes the personal Western advisor to the young Dalai Lama, and they became quite close ... right up to the fleeing from the Chinese invasion to India seven years later on thru the rugged mountain passes with the Dalai Lama. He so describes their flight with the Chinese fast on their heels . So you have an amazing insight into that time and
the young Dalai Lama lad back then , as seen thru this
westerner's eyes. Hence the title ...Seven Years in Tibet.

Very interesting non fiction. The other german , the young leiutenant was a civil engineer and showed the Tibetans how to terrace their apricot groves and organize and improve the agricultural & civic landscape during his stay during the war.

Nice read ...make apricots not war !

regards

;-)
